Head: Professor Andrew J Taylor [Bio]

The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine offers a wide range of non-invasive cardiac imaging, with the echocardiography service performing over 7000 trans-thoracic echocardiograms, 300 trans-oesophageal echocardiograms and 600 stress echocardiograms each year.  The Department of non-invasive cardiac imaging was one of the first in Australia to introduce 3-D echocardiography, commencing 3-D transthoracic echocardiography in 2006 and 3-D transoesophageal echocardiography in 2008.  More recently contrast echocardiography and global longitudinal strain have become available for clinically appropriate cases.  The Department is also recognised locally and internationally as a centre of excellence in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging, with approximately 1000 CMR scans performed each year.  In addition to its clinical role, The Alfred CMR service is active in many locally established as well as multicentre research studies, and generates around 10 publications each year, many of which feature in high impact journals.  The Department is also is accredited to perform and report computed tomographic coronary angiography (CTCA), and has established an off-site CTCA reporting service for regional imaging services.
