In 2012, the first specialised clinic in Victoria for patients with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) was established at the Heart Centre.

HCM is the commonest inherited cardiac disease, affecting 1 in 500 people and is also the commonest cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.  The "HCM Clinic @ The Alfred" was created by Dr Andris Ellims as an extension to his HCM-related PhD research projects and aims to improve the management of patients with HCM and encourage further research into this condition.  The "HCM Clinic @ The Alfred" consists of a team of cardiologists, a cardiac surgeon and a genetic counsellor and has seen over 60 patients and their families from across Victoria in its first year.
