Head: Prof Karlheinz Peter

Myocardial Infarction is the central focus of Prof Peter’s research. His group at Baker IDI and The Alfred has developed several approaches aimed to detect atherosclerotic plaques at risk of rupture and to identify the patients with a high risk of suffering a heart attack. The group established several methods that have the potential of identifying patients at risk via protein and cellular tests in urine and blood. Prof Peter has several research projects ongoing that aim to design new contrast agents for ultrasound, PET and MRI that can identify blood clots, inflammatory reactions and dangerous, rupture-prone atherosclerotic plaques. Using biotechnological and microfluidics tools, Prof Peter further investigates the mechanisms that cause atherosclerosis and he has also developed several therapeutic approaches that allow effective therapy of myocardial infarction without side effects, particularly bleeding complications. One recent approach is the targeted delivery of stem cells towards improvement of recovery after myocardial infarction. Several of these research projects have a strong potential to be translated from the research bench towards providing direct benefits to patients.
